The base of the 18th-century brick kiln was perfectly preserved beneath a thick deposit of garden soil

The excavation found the site of a kiln from the middle of the 18th century, which had been used, for the manufacture of bricks. Earlier trial excavations immediately to the west had found a series of quarry trenches where the clay for making the bricks was extracted. The kiln had been nothing more elaborate than a large bonfire resting on an area of paving stones and the site was littered with waste pieces of brick which had distorted during the firing process. A large hollow filled with soil below the base of the kiln was probably the remains of a medieval clay quarry.
