The fragment of medieval grave slab re-used in the wall of an outbuilding

At the end of an extensive campaign of excavations across the Paradise estate, a watch was kept as work progressed to develop the site. Amongst the discoveries was a fragment of a stone grave slab re-used in the wall of an outbuilding. The style of the decoration suggests the grave slab dates from around the year 1300 and it probably came from the nearby church of St Mary. The church was partially reduced to rubble during the siege of Scarborough Castle in the English Civil War and the fragment of grave slab was among the pieces of stonework salvaged for re-use.
