Digging into the fill of the towns first defensive ditch

The development of a site at the junction of Leading Post Street and St Sepulchre Street led to the discovery of a part of the defences on the west side of the Oldborough dating from the 12th century. The archaeologists found the remains of a clay rampart fronted by a ditch which was filled with a soft black, peaty soil. The ditch began to be used as a rubbish dump in the 13th century after new defences were constructed further west when the Newborough was added to the town. Among the finds preserved in the fill of the ditch was part of the skeleton of a horse.
