One of the settling tanks preserved below the beach

A prolonged campaign of excavation and survey work took place to record the remains of one of a series of alum works found along the coast of north-east Yorkshire. The site dated from the 17th to the mid 19th century and many of the remains are disappearing due to coastal erosion. The survey recorded the alum quarries at Saltwick Nab and Black Nab and the remains of a harbour in the bay between them. The excavation concentrated on the site of the alum house which was partially preserved below the beach in the centre of the bay.
