The excavation in progress

An area at the rear of this property was investigated prior to the start of construction work. A single trench was excavated to a depth of 2.5 metres without encountering anything other than backfill deposits of probable 18th or 19th century date. These deposits had been deliberately tipped onto the site to extend the garden area at the rear of the house down what otherwise would have been quite a steeply sloping site. This activity was probably connected with the construction of a terracing wall at the rear of the garden.
