A research excavation was undertaken on the hilltop on the north side of Peasholm Gap to try and locate the site of an English Civil War star-shaped fort shown on early Ordnance Survey maps and described in various historical works on the town. The excavation succeeded in locating the infilled ditch of the fort which had survived as an earthowork until just before the Second World War. A quantity of flint debris was found suggesting prehistoric activity in the area whilst a straight-sided trench in the fort ditch was probably fairly recent in date.
