The excavation failed to find any prehistoric remains on the hilltop

The existence of some form of defensive work across the narrowest part of Oliver’s Mount was recorded by antiquarians in the 18th and 19th centuries and a levelled earthwork also appears on aerial photographs. An excavation to try and locate this feature was mounted after a geophysical survey failed to find any definite traces. A long trench was excavated close to the east side of the hill in the estimated location of the feature but it also failed to find any remains. The date and purpose of the earthwork therefore continues to be a mystery
