A section through the medieval rampart with the base of the 15th century town wall above

The excavation took place when plans were put forward to build in the grounds of the former Convent School. The dig did not find many medieval remains suggesting this part of the town was not very densely settled in the middle ages. However, remains of the town defences were discovered along the north boundary of the site. These consisted of a clay rampart probably dating from the 12th century with a section of stone wall on top that is part of the masonry defences added in the late 15th century.
