Longwestgate was one of the most important streets in the medieval town

During building works to convert the former St Thomas’s School on the south side of Longwestgate into flats the remains of a stone terracing wall were revealed built into the fabric of a late 19th century cellar. The earliest part of the house dates from the 18th century and to the rear were extensive dump deposits dating from the 19th century to create a playground when the house was extended to make the school.
