The stone-lined culvert after excavation

An excavation took place in advance of plans to develop a site on Springfield at the rear of the former Quaker Meeting House. The dig found that the meeting house occupies roughly the same site as the medieval chapel of St Sepulchre church which vanished in the 16th century. The other medieval buildings found on the site were probably part of the Franciscan Friary whilst the dig also discovered an impressive stone-walled culvert which had been built in the middle ages to direct the flow of a small stream called the Damyet across this part of the town.
