This building is constructed across the first line of the town’s medieval defences

An excavation took place after workmen underpinning the exterior wall of this property came across the remains of the Oldborough ditch which was dug to defend the west side of the town in the 12th century. The ditch was filled with a soft peaty soil containing large quantities of medieval pottery, animal bone and fragments of leather. The ditch was filled in during the 13th century because new defences were built further to the west to protect an addition to the town called the Newborough.
