The excavation in progress

A female skeleton was excavated on the edge of the North Bay cliff near Mulgrave Place under Home Office Licence A2033 after the discovery of several human bones on the surface. The female was estimated to be between 20 to 30 years of age at the time of death and the skeleton was aligned east-west suggesting she had been buried in consecrated ground. Human remains have been unearthed in this area before and they are most likely to be burials from the graveyard attached to the medieval chapel of St Mary Magdalene which stood just to the north of the parish church.
