The excavation of Roman remains below the medieval rampart

Archaeologists monitoring the construction of new houses in the grounds of the former Convent School found evidence of a Roman settlement preserved below the later rampart of the town’s medieval defences. A small hearth and a nearby gully may have been part of a building whilst the discovery of a quernstone for the hand-milling of cereal crops and chaff from the winnowing of grain suggest this was primarily an agricultural settlement. A small quantity of Roman pottery was also recovered from the site.
