Modern Falsgrave showing the location of the excavation

The Scarborough suburb of Falsgrave was a settlement in its own right at the time of the Domesday Survey of 1086 when it was the most important village in the district. An excavation project to try and locate evidence of this settlement has been started. The excavation was on an open strip of grass bordering the road which at this point may follow the alignment of a Roman route to the coast. The site did not produce any evidence of medieval activity and was covered with material which had slumped down from the former coal yard on the slope above.
