The burnt layers filling the brick kiln

The burnt layers filling the brick kiln

A research excavation at 5 Coastguard Cottages was soon after followed by a second research excavation on the neighbouring property. This revealed an area of rough cobbles in one part of the site that might have been the floor of a temporary shelter for livestock. The other trenches confirmed the existence of a U shaped gully below the north boundary wall and of the 18th century clamp kiln for firing bricks as first discovered in the excavations at 5 Coastguard Cottages.
