The beach originally ran across this part of Quay Street

An excavation of a derelict building site on the north side of Quay Street revealed how the ground level had been raised above sea level by dumping layers of sand and clay onto the sloping beach in front of an area where the cliff slope had been levelled back. The consolidated land was then built on and the excavations found the stone foundations of a house. The site is overlooked by the steep slope of the castle hill and is close to the site of the settlement reputedly destroyed by fire during an attack by a force of Vikings in September 1066. However, no evidence of this event was discovered by the excavation.
