Trench 2 showing the top of the clay close to the surface

This excavation was carried out in advance of the possible redevelopment of the site. The site is a level flagged area which is lower than much of the surrounding land, with, on its north side, a grassy slope. The 19th century maps show the ‘town moat’ ie the Newborough defences, crossing this site. It was hoped that the excavation would provide evidence of this. Two trenches were excavated, one on the grassy slope and one on the level flagged area. Unfortunately both trenches encountered 19th century remains from the buildings which were on the site, and below this, natural clay. No evidence of the town moat was found and it is now thought that this lay further south than is shown on maps, in the area occupied by the cellars of the adjacent building. There was no evidence of the rampart and any pre-medieval archaeology had been lost too.
